One look at the masculine label on the Nitro Pro jug that screams manly man any female is sure to run in the opposite direction with fear of packing on muscle faster than her acrylics take to dry. Muscleology has sure accomplished their goal of creating a package to house their more than stellar protein to appeal to their customer, but what about women? Do dark and rigid graphics and labeling mean the product inside is not soft enough for the female consumer? Or should us women put aside the look of the product and take a chance that we might end up with a product that will benefit our physique and health?
Never Judge a Book by its Cover!
How many times have you heard this figure of speech?! Too many to count that’s for sure. But if you think for one moment the above statement is false you’re completely out of your mind. It’s not what’s on the outside; it’s what’s on the inside that truly counts, right? Or does that only apply to people? Nope. Not in this case. Sure enough I decided to try Nitro Pro protein powder out for myself.
Considering how picky I am when it comes to supplements, Nitro Pro’s label claims had to meet a few of my strict standards before I would even bring a jug home. First, if I am going to use a whey protein powder for my pre-and post-workout shake, it MUST be whey protein isolate. This is because whey protein isolate (WPI) is of higher quality (purity), higher biological value (bv), contains more protein and is lower in fat and lactose per serving than any whey protein concentrate (90-98% protein:70-85%protein). Second, one scoop must contain 4g or less of carbohydrate and 2g or less of fat. The purpose of a protein powder is to supplement my protein portion for that particular meal. Carbohydrates and fats will be added at my discretion with use of whole foods such as oils and oats. Last but not least, 1scoop must contain anywhere from 20-30g protein per scoop. Usually my personal protein portion size is between 20-30g of protein per meal. So let’s see if Muscleology’s NITRO PRO measured up!
Whey Protein Isolate – Check!
Carbohydrate Content in one scoop – 4g – Check!
Fat Content in one scoop - .5g – Check!
Protein content per scoop – 30g – Check! (Just barely)
Looks like Nitro Pro deserves a fair shot!
Each section of my review will be judged on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest score possible:
Ingredient Profile and Supplement Facts…..8
Like I said before, this product meets all of my standards. Being a female I would’ve been happier with a portion of 20g of protein per scoop. This makes it easier to measure if I need 25g rather than 20g for that particular meal. Typically I do not consume 30g of protein in a given meal. This product is also loaded with glutamine and branch chain amino acids which are essential for muscle recovery/repair and are also protein sparing. I could always use more glutamine and BCAAs in my diet.
Flavor…..9
Chocolate is usually “safe” and the reason why I chose to give it a try. The first scoop was a little strange but this could be due to the fact that I had gotten used to using another brand of protein and the flavor compounds are different. Once you get past the first taste, this chocolaty shake tastes like chocolate milk! Yum! Also delicious if you add some Ezekiel cereal to it post-workout, double yum! (Best if mixed with cold water)
Mixability (with a spoon)……10
Absolutely no clumps and mixes easily with a spoon. Perfect considering I prefer to use a cup and a spoon rather than making a mess of a perfectly clean blender.
GI Tolerance…….10
Some protein powders will give me a horrid stomach ache shortly after consuming. Nitro Pro caused ZERO gastrointestinal discomfort each and every time I have used it.
Total Score….37 points out of 40
I would highly recommend this protein powder to a (girl)friend. It contains quality proteins and is low in carbs and fats, perfect for pre- and post-workout or any meal on-the-go!
