New Study: Increase Dairy and Increase Fat Loss?

by Shoshana Pritzker

Already getting your recommended 3-servings of dairy per day?  New research study says inreasing from 3 to 5 servings of dairy per day can help fight obesity when paired with a reduced calorie diet.

It used to be that scientists were claiming the high fat content in dairy (cheese, yogurts, milk, cream, etc) were adding to the obesity epidemic.  With this new study, scientists are finally seeing the light.  Including dairy in your reduced calorie diet could potentially be an exponential aide in fat loss, but only if you're using dairy properly.

In the study, those eating more dairy products benefitted from higher mean levels of weight loss, high mean levels of fat mass loss, greater drop of fat mass loss, and greater total percentage abdominal fat loss. The nutrients responsible?  Well that would be the high protein, Calcium and Vitamin D content (amongst other nutrients).  I'd also like to think some of the fat didn't hurt either because as we all know, you need fat to burn fat.

Choose your dairy wisely.  Some excellent choices to include in your daily diet are:
- skim milk (low in sugar and fat free, high in calcium, protein)
- low-fat or fat-free cottage cheese (excellent protein source, low in fat and sugar)
- part skim mozzarella string cheese (excellent healthy fat source, low in sugar)
- whole natural cheeses (excellent source of healthy fats, mostly carb free)
- greek and natural yogurt (very low in sugar, excellent source of protein, yummy!)
