Let's Get High

LET’S GET HIGH

gen-stroboEver wonder why you feel so good after a workout or any other form of exercise? Ok, so you’re a little out of breath and your muscles are a little tired, but you really do feel better than before you started.  You have a feeling of contentment and euphoria, a “natural high.”

When you workout, endorphins are released.  Endorphins are a hormone or compound released from your pituitary gland.  They are also released during times of pain or injury.  Endorphins are your body’s natural drug.  This high feeling you get from them can last upwards of 10-12 hours.

Exercise not only creates a better body, promotes good health, builds muscle tone and helps you to live longer but it also relieves stress.  You may have heard people say how they HAVE to get their workout in or HAVE to go on a run.  It’s because they are addicted to exercise.  They are addicted to that high they get when they finish.

Our bodies are so cleverly designed that they not only produce these endorphins during exercise, but it also decreases cortisol, which is responsible for stress.  It increases dopamine, adrenaline, and serotonin too.  This chemical change in your body leads to only one thing and that is a calmer, more peaceful feeling in your body and a boost to your mood.  This mood elevating combination comes from doing what you should be doing anyway to keep your body healthy and fit.

There are many ways that you can get high with exercise.  It can take as little as 20 minutes to get that good time feeling.  Here are a few ways to reduce stress from the daily grind, keep your body moving and get those endorphins “rushing”.

Take a walk:  a great way to get that rush and ease the stress of the day

Get to the gym:  Gain muscle tone and decrease cortisol with every workout

Go on a bike ride:  Weekends can be stress free

Exercise will ease muscle pain, give you these feel good effects, lift your spirits and give you more energy.  C’mon let’s get high together!!!
