Creatures of Habit

May 06, 2009

As a child you're taught to try new things.  Some kids fight and won't touch a vegetable with a ten foot pole, while others will eat just about anything.  Why is it that as we get older we become stuck in our old ways and avoid stepping out of our little box?  This can be applied to just about anything, but what I am referring to is in terms of diet.

More often then not I find myself eating the same foods every single day.  Dining out is no different.  I find myself searching the menu for anything that remotely resembles what I cook for myself at home or ways to alter the selection to my liking.  This is not a bad thing, but over time you may find yourself a little bored with your options.  At that point you've got to remember that you DO have more choices...you DO have more options and foods to select from.  It's just about deciding to take the time to prepare these new foods and take the chance that you'll enjoy them just as much as you like your 'regular' foods.

Just this week I decided to step out of my food phase and make some actual meals.  For the past couple of months I've been eating primarily salads or steamed broccoli with olive oil and of course you can't forget the delicious London Broils and Turkey Tenderloins I've been broiling up.  Alas I got bored.  Tired of eating salads at home and at restaurants.  So I got super excited and bought some different foods than the norm.

What is happening is that I am finding that I am enjoying my meals that much more.  I feel like I have more options when eating at home, and I'm wondering what else I can cook up or add to my dishes.  I'm also finding that I am full after just one serving whereas with my old meals I could eat and eat and eat and never be full.

My next concern is that I end up making these new meals my 'norm'.  Ultimately I am entering in to my next 'food phase'...the cycle continues...lol!!
